The world as we know it
2010 heralds the ‘Planet of the apps’
immedia Head Strategist Anice Hassim says this year will see us become the ‘Planet of the Apps’ with those addictive little downloads popping up on every screen including your car dashboard, television and photo frames…
‘Apps, apps’ everywhere
3-billion downloaded and headed for a download rate of 1-billion per month… no question Apple has kick started a new modality. Expect to see apps everywhere…
Smart TVs
Suddenly the humble television set is sexy again… and not just for DStv or the SABC. Expect to see television redefined with online content, interactivity and exploration. You know how you are watching a movie and you think, hmm… wonder what the buzz on this is… more
Hot off the press
“It’s a computer Jim, but not as we know it…”
At the end of last month Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the launch of the Apple iPad as only he can and with just a little bit of drama. This portable device is set to redefine computing like the original Macintosh once did. Think small… a tablet, and think big too… a 60″ Apple TV running the same OS as the tablet and suddenly all your apps, content and media are on your TV too…
The launch of the iPad fits in perfectly with the Apple’s strategy of developing technology that allows consumers to access information, in whatever form, at their own convenience. The iPad is beautiful, slick and easy to carry at all times… more >

The Apple iPad at a glance
The Apple iPad means navigating the web and using its range of applications has never been easier or more intuitive. Why? Because you use the most natural pointing device there is: your finger… The Apple iPad lets you see web pages, one page at a time. Whether you’re looking at a page in portrait or landscape, you can see everything at a size that’s actually readable…
Scroll through a page just by flicking your finger up or down on the screen. Or pinch to zoom in or out on a photo. You quickly move from one page to the next. This allows you to engage with a multitude of applications including:
- Mail – A split-screen view showing both an opened email and the messages in your inbox.
- Photos – Photos are displayed in an album as though they were in a stack. Just tap the stack, and the whole album opens up.
- Video – The large, high-resolution screen makes iPad perfect for watching any kind of video: from HD movies and TV shows to podcasts and music videos.
- Music – All your music is literally at your fingertips. Browse by album, song, artist, or genre with a simple flick. To play a song, just tap it.
- App Store – iPad runs almost 140,000 apps from the App Store. New apps designed specifically for iPad are highlighted, allowing you to take full advantage of their features.
- iBooks – This is a great new way to read and buy books.1 Download the free app from the App Store and buy everything from classics to best sellers from the built-in iBookstore.
RadioPod Q&A
Kishyr Ramdial is not just a pretty face. He’s also the fairly brainy guy, who heads up our research and development team. Now at some companies that might mean that he hides behind his computer all day, doing very little, but at immedia that means he spends days, nights and then days again, inventing the ‘next big thing.’ That’s because he’s realised that the only way to predict the future is to invent it (quoting the great Alan Kay).
P.S. He’s only human and has been known to take a break for food, water and Twitter
(not necessarily in that order)…
Q. immedia recently launched its RadioPod iPhone application that’s selling like hot cakes. What’s all the fuss about?
A. RadioPod catalogues the best of South African audio podcasts. It doesn’t matter if it’s by a big commercial radio station or a dude in his garage mixing his own tunes. If it’s good enough for South Africa, it’s in RadioPod. It allows you to explore other great podcasts as well keep up-to-date with your favourite ones.
